WUB-Hawaii History
In 1899, Toyama Kyuzo led the first group of 26 immigrants from
Okinawa to the sugar plantations of Hawaii. By 1907, more than 10,000
Okinawans had settled in such distant places as Mexico, the
Philippines, New Caledonia and Peru. By 1930, more than 54,000 had left
Okinawa, over half of them settling in South America. In
Argentina they specialized in cleaning and dyeing establishements, and
in Hawaii they became restaurant owners and food distributors. Some
became extensive landholders and a few became millionares in the coffee
growing regions of Brazil. Today the worldwide overseas Uchinanchu
community has grown to over 300,000 people.
