WUB-Hawaii Scholarship Fund

Congratulations to the 1st WUB scholarship recipient Mary Nakada from Peru! Mary will be coming to Hawaii on August 5th, 2006.

Title: WUB establishes Scholarship Fund; Okinawa Times 2/31/06

Summary of the article:
-To foster internationally-minded people (Kokusai-jin)

WUB has established a scholarship fund for Okinawans and Mary Nakada (from Peru) was selected as the first recipient. She will be trained on international issues, economics, culture, and history at the East-West Center, Hawaii, U. S. A. for 5 months.

Robert Nakasone, WUB Executive Advisor (Sodan yaku) expressed his expectation and stated, “To train young Uchinanchu as internationally-minded people that will become future leaders in the world, contributes to the growth of WUB network in the world.”

Taizo Makishi, President of WUB Okinawa noted, “We would also like to collect funds here in Okinawa and support the WUB Scholarship Endowment Fund.

This fund was established to give opportunities to worldwide Okinawans (Uchinanchu) to be internationally educated. The scholarship will partial pay for the round ticket to Hawaii, stipend, housing, and program fee. Okinawans (Uchinanchu) from the countries and regions where WUB branches are located is qualified for the scholarship.

Currently, the WUB Scholarship Endowment Fund has collected 70,000 USD and operates the scholarship with the fund interest. WUB plans to collect more donations from the branches and hopes to further develop the program.
