WUB-Hawaii
Student-Mentor Program

The WUB Student-Mentor program matches Okinawan students in Hawaii with "best fit" WUB Members for a one-on-one student-mentor arrangement. WUB-Hawaii has many members who are top professionals and leaders who have an extensive network of contacts in Hawaii, and even Okinawan and beyond. The Mentor program is a flexible, evolving program tailored to be suitable for each student-mentor relationship.

Objectives:

The WUB-Hawaii Mentor program strives to help Okinawan students in Hawaii
  1. socially, (adjust to living away from Okinawa and acclimate to Hawaii culture)
  2. educationally, (helping with studies when possible)
  3. professionally, (future career help, counseling, networking, leadership)

Student Eligibility:

  1. University undergraduate or graduate students, from Okinawa.
                  From UH and community colleges.
                  From HPU
                  From other colleges
                  From EWC programs
Others Uchinanchu or “Uchinanchu at heart” students worldwide

  2. Fill out the WUB-Hawaii Student-Mentor Application

Based on the Application, the student will be matched with a WUB Member based on:

  1. career objectives
  2. education
  3. Okinawa hometown
  4. hobbies/interests

Mentor Guidelines:

  1. WUB member
  2. Able to provide assistance in following areas:
      Living in Hawaii
      School/Studies
Career (Provide or introduce other contacts (which can be non WUB members).
  3. Mentors should be keenly aware that this program is for the benefit for the student, so keep asking what the student would like to know/learn.
  4. Mentors should be available to respond in a timely manner to phone and email contact from the student.
  5. Mentors will understand if the student would like to change to another Mentor.

Students and mentors should meet at least once per month, and keep in contact via phone or email. The student should take the initiative to contact the mentor, although the mentor may also contact the student.

A member from the Mentor Program committee will periodically contact students and mentors, to see if the relationship is a good one, or should be adjusted. Students who would like to switch mentors should contact the Mentor Program committee.

Application form will be posted shortly.
