Jimmy Inamine Tribute

Jimmy Inamine - Ambassador of Aloha

The eighth "A Taste of Okinawa!" is Hawaii's tribute to Jimmy Inamine, Okinawa's "Ambassador of Aloha." In the early '50s, Jimmy began making and delivering fresh baked bread and dounuts with a few employees and a single truck. In 1957, he opened his first bakery, grocery and restaurant in Oyama and called it "Jimmy's." When he visited Hawaii for the first time he fell in love with Hawaii's people and lifestyle and decided to adopt the aloha shirt as Jimmy's company uniform.

Jimmy Inamine helped draw attention to the activities of the Hawaii Nisei war veterans who still live in Okinawa. He gave generously himself and helped to coordinate donations for the Hawaii Okinawa Center, Maui Okinawa Center and several Hawaii charities. He has also hosted many visiting dignitaries and HUOA study tour groups during their visits to Okinawa, helping in many ways to pave the way for international exchange and understanding.

The members of WUB Hawaii are grateful for this opportunity to share the delicious Okinawan cooking of Jimmy's with the people of Hawaii. In keeping with the spirit of Jimmy Inamine, money raised at this year's event will be donated to the Hawaii United Okinawa Association for its 2006 fundraising effort.
